What Is Lorem Ipsum (and Why Designers Use It)

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text — scrambled, meaningless Latin used to fill a layout so you can judge its look without being distracted by real words. It typically begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet".

Why not just type "text text text"?

Repeated words create unnatural patterns and uneven spacing. Lorem Ipsum has a natural distribution of word lengths, so paragraphs look like real content and reveal true line breaks, rhythm and density.

Where it comes from

The text is derived from a 1st-century-BC work by Cicero, scrambled since the 1500s by printers making type specimens. That long history is why it remains the design standard.

When to use it

Use it for mockups, templates and wireframes — anywhere layout matters before copy is written. Replace it with real content before launch, and never ship it by accident.
