Word & Character Count: Limits That Actually Matter

Word and character counts drive essays, SEO tags and social posts. Learn the limits that matter and how to count words and characters instantly.

A word count is the number of words in a text; a character count is the number of characters, with or without spaces. Both matter whenever a form or platform imposes a limit.

Limits worth knowing

  • Meta title — aim for ~60 characters before Google truncates it
  • Meta description — around 150–160 characters
  • X/Twitter post — 280 characters
  • SMS — 160 characters per segment
  • Essays — usually specified in words

Characters with vs without spaces

Many limits count spaces, some do not. Social platforms count every character including spaces and emoji (which can count as two or more), so always check against the real counter, not an estimate.
